David Jewell

David Jewel was first fascinated by art as a young boy when his parents took him on a tour of the great Southwest. Walking through a small arts and crafts fair in Cody, Wyoming, David saw a Native American man sitting on a metal chair in front of a blank 18 x 24 canvas. The artist, noticing the 13 year old boy's curiosity, began painting using only a 4 inch brush that looked like it had been purchased at the local Home Depot. In no more than 15 minutes, the man had painted the most delicate, detailed and beautiful landscape David had ever seen. The boy was amazed and the seed was planted.
That seed finally pushed itself to the surface about 15 years ago prompting David to explore his fascination with art. He spent a lot of time researching the topic, observing painters in action, and practicing himself. In the beginning, David began working with oils as he was greatly influenced by Bob Ross and Jerry Yarnell. Finding he had talent as well as excitement for this art medium, he began setting up one-man shows wherever he could. Success in sales inspired him to continue painting, but when he switched to acrylics, he found his true niche, experiencing even greater success. David began participating in arts and crafts shows and then was invited to join galleries. His success has been such that he has won awards for his acrylic paintings and enjoys not only a local but also a world-wide audience.
The beauty of the Southwestern and Western landscapes, wildlife and people is what inspires his acrylic paintings as well as his use of a delicate mixture of warm and cool colors that result in primarily realistic images. David's goal with each painting is to inspire the "wow" effect in the viewer.
When the original painting is complete, David has the image scanned into a computer which, in turn creates a jpeg that can be copied using very high quality paper and ink. In this way prints of his original work can be sold in various sizes to meet the needs of the purchaser. Of course, this also allows his reproductions to be more affordable.
One can find a sampling of David's framed award-winning originals along with framed and matted prints, and cards at the Leaping Lizard Art Gallery.
